Community Care is built on the principal of neighbours helping neighbours. An important demonstration of this is our Luminary Circle, a group of 40 dedicated monthly givers. It is our goal to double the membership in the next year so the Luminary Circle shines brighter and has a greater impact.
Monthly giving matters as it provides reliable funding necessary for Community Care to address the challenges our community is facing. Because the senior population in the region is significantly higher than the provincial average (28% compared to 18%), the demand for services is high. And serving one of Ontario’s largest rural municipalities, covering over 3,000 km², reaching and serving our neighbours is complex and costly as it requires additional staff, volunteers, vehicles and locations.
Monthly giving enables Community Care to be a steady light for our neighbours, providing dependable care, high-impact programs and the ability to respond quickly to changing community needs.
Monthly gifts help address challenges such as these:
- Reduce Social Isolation: A monthly gift of $15 provides a warm meal at our Diner’s Club. This program is essential for providing older adults with “social connection”.
- Strengthen our Reach: Community Care relies on over 350 volunteers to deliver our programs. A monthly gift of $20 covers the cost to recruit, train and retain a new volunteers.
- Overcome Transportation Barriers: Monthly contributions ensure that seniors can reach vital medical appointments. For example, a gift of $25 per month cover the cost of six return trips to Peterborough in a Specialized Transportation Van. These services provide peace of mind for neighbours who are unable to drive themselves.
- Enable Seniors to Live at Home: Delivering meals is a meaningful thing we can do for others to help them stay in their own homes. A monthly commitment of $40 provides a weekly hot meal delivered directly to a senior’s home through the Meals on Wheels program.
- Reduce Caregiver Strain: A monthly gift of $60 allows a senior to attend the Adult Day Program twice a month. This program is essential for providing social connection and offering respite to caregivers.
Meet Sharon. A dedicated member of our Luminary Circle.
When Sharon’s husband Roy was battling cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, getting him to medical appointments became one of their biggest challenges. When he needed radiation treatments at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto, Sharon was unable to drive in the dark for the early morning appointments. Community Care arranged a volunteer driver and wheelchair-accessible van to take them to treatment, providing not only transportation but peace of mind during an incredibly difficult time. After Roy’s passing, Sharon wanted to give back to the organization that had supported them when they needed it most. She became both a volunteer and a member of Community Care’s Luminary Circle monthly giving program.
Over the next 15 years, Sharon volunteered with programs including the Adult Day Program and Meals on Wheels, and actively particpates in our Luminary Circle (monthly giving program) to ensure others can access the same compassionate care that brought comfort to her family. Sharon’s journey from client to volunteer to monthly donor is a powerful reminder of how kindness comes full circle, helping ensure Community Care can be there for the next person who needs it.
